1964: Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute (now Saint Petersburg Marine Technical University)
1982: Ph.D. in Engineering Science, Thesis “Method for assessing the ice strength of the vessel’s hull according to strain tests"

Professional activity
1965-1984: Researcher at the Department of Ship Performance in Ice, AARI;
1984-present: Head of the Department of Ship Performance in Ice, AARI.

Field experience:
More than 25 sea Arctic expeditions, including ice trial of the lead ship of nuclear-powered icebreakers of the “Arctic” type;
2 experimental studies to assess the possibility of year-round navigation in the Western Arctic Sector;
3 Antarctic expeditions, incl. rescue operation of the R/V "Mikhail Somov" .

Research field
Impact of sea ice on ships and other engineering structures intended for operation in the Arctic and freezing seas of Russia. Methods for calculating ice loads, recommendations on how to minimize them. Simulation and field tests of fracture mechanics and strength properties of sea ice.
Development of initial technical requirements for new projects of research vessels for the Arctic and Antarctic. Methods for predicting reliability indicators that take into account the random nature of ice loads, the variation of sea ice properties and the development of numerical procedures for the implementation of the proposed methods.

Scientific organisations and expertise:
- Member of the Navigation Safety section in the State Administration of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS);
- Member of the Science and Technology Council “Shipbuilding”
