Education
1971-1976: Physical geography and climatology at the Geographical Faculty of Leningrad State University.
1987-1988: Post-graduate course of glaciology at the Geographical Faculty of the Moscow State University.
1988: Ph.D thesis: "Physical properties of polar ices as related to the climatic conditions of ice formation". Defended on October 20, 1988 at Moscow State University.


Scientific activities and research highlights
Ice core scientist. Research activity focuses on the physical properties of polar ice as related to ice-core paleoclimate records and ice-flow modeling, and the formation and evolution of gas hydrates in polar ice sheets and sub-ice environments. Other research topics include: Antarctic ice sheet surface mass balance studies; using stable water isotopes to reconstruct past climatic conditions and for the characterization of the behaviour of subglacial lakes. Contribution to the successful completion of the tripartite Russia-France-US Vostok deep drilling project (1989-1998), which led to the obtaining of an iconic climatic record covering the last 420,000 years. Contribution to development and implementation of the technology for the first unsealing of subglacial Lake Vostok in Antarctica. Together with French colleagues, development of a new method for ice core dating based on the link between the total gas content of ice and local insolation. In co-authorship with Japanese and Russian colleagues, development of a theory of formation and growth of clathrate air-hydrate crystals in polar ice sheets. Contribution to the development of the physical models of snow-firn and bubbly ice densifications. Development of a theory for air bubble formation in polar ice.


Polar Expeditions
1978-1979: Expedition to Severnaya Zemlya (North Land), wintering over at the Vavilova Ice Cap, for deep drilling and ice core studies.
1979-2018: 18 expeditions to Antarctica (Vostok Station) for deep drilling and ice core studies. Three winters at Vostok Station (1979-1981, 1983-1985, 1988-1990). Leader of the international (Russian-French-American and Russian-French) deep drilling and ice core teams in the 1995-1996, 1996-1997, 2006-2007, and 2007-2008 field seasons; chief scientist in the 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and 2017-2018 austral field seasons at Vostok Station.


National/international projects, scientific organisations and expertise
1989-2003: coordinator (from the Russian side) of the Russia-US-France collaboration on the Vostok ice core and palaeoclimate research.
1994-2001: member of the SCAR GLOCHANT Palaeoclimate Planning Group (representative of the Vostok Ice Core Project).
1996-2000: member of the Working Group on Physics of Ice Core Records (PICR) of the International Commission on Snow and Ice.
2001-2013: Chief Scientist of the national project ‘Deep ice coring, paleoclimate research and subglacial Lake Vostok exploration in Antarctica’ in the framework of the Federal Research Program ‘Study and research in the Antarctic’.
2007-2009: Chief Scientist of two projects implemented as part of the national program for the International Polar Year, ‘Glacio-geophysical investigations along the ice-flow lines passing through Lake Vostok’ and ‘Comprehensive investigation of subglacial Lake Vostok including lake entry and water sample retrieval’.

1992 – Awarded Antarctic Service Medal of USA (NSF, Department of the Navy, USA).
2007 – Awarded title of Honoured Meteorologist of the Russian Federation.
2010 – Received Letter of Commendation from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for ‘the personal contribution to the development of key aspects of polar science, for the implementation of scientific, practical and operational work of national importance in the Arctic and Antarctic’.
2011 – Decoration ‘High Achiever in Environmental Protection’ of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.
2012 – The Order ‘For Merit to the Fatherland’ (IV class) ‘for outstanding personal contribution to the organisation and realisation of the project for the unsealing of subglacial Lake Vostok (Antarctica) in the framework of the Federal Targeted Program ‘World Ocean’.
2012 – Decoration ‘Honorary Prospector’ of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.
